Hi,

Have replaced my troublsome mk2 with a lovely Mk1 2.3 auto, with lpg conversion. Well it will be lovely when I get a couple of minor issues sorted.

Firstly the central locking isn't working on the boot lock, neither is the reversing distance sensor (its the type with the little black box mounted behind the rear windscreen), is it likely to be a broken wire in the gaiter?

next, one of the dashboard bulbs has gone, not a big problem but a bit of an annoyance, are these easy to change?

Lastly, the airbag light is on. I take it my old vagcom lead won't work on the mk1? Is there a way of redetting the light or do I need a new code reader?

Thanks in advance.

boot lock etc yes try gaiter wiring dont reconnect old wire as its brittle solder in new wire.

dash bulbs dead easy to change just a sod to wangle the dash out bit of a knack and dont loose the 2 rubber bits on side.

vagcom will work the everything but the engine as its a ford derived ecu and engine out of a ford scorpio i think.

hmm im fancying a mk2 alhambra tdi 130hp in silver like mad for some reason just love the front end on them, when i get one all planned out dropped and full body kit on it with 19" alloys ive got waiting. (dream on me wife says the sharans lasted 4 years)

The cluster in my Mk1 came out very easy, IIRC you remove the black trim around the Cluster (a couple of screws I think) and then its obvious how the cluster itself is fixed/removed. Dont recall any rubber bits... (maybe someone jammed them in to try and stop some elusive rattling  )

Rather late for OP but for anybody coming late to this - my '99 has two lugs one each side of the cluster and the rubbers fit on these. Two screws at the top of the cluster - remove them, the top of the cluster swivels on the lugs. Swing it right down, then you can pull the cluster forward, disconnect the two cables (on the back, one each side) and wiggle it out past the fully lowered steering column. It's a tight fit but doable. The bulb holders sit in recesses in the back - one way to twist the holder is with long-nosed pliers.
